When you accumulate points on designated American Express cards, such as the Platinum Card or the Starwood Preferred Guest Card, you earn Membership Rewards. As with most programs, you earn 1 point per dollar spent. Of course, us Intrepid Flyers garner these points rapidly upon signing up for these cards, generating 25,000 to 100,000 points in one fell swoop. There are many ways to use Membership Rewards. Most people use them terribly. Let’s not do that.
Membership Rewards can be redeemed for travel, merchandise, or transferred to a number of negotiated vendors. By far the most efficient use of Membership Rewards is a transfer to another program.
Here is what you need to know about transferring American Express Membership Rewards.
Do NOT use any of the four available hotel transfers.
DO use any of the 17 available airline program transfers. With the 17 available transfer partners, you have access to seven independent airlines and all three alliances, which effectively allow you passage on nearly every carrier in the world.
